Serenity EA/AA Term 4 Week 4 Problem Solving

1. Sam was planting fruit trees in his garden. He had 12 trees. How many did he put in each ¼ of the garden?
= 3 because 3 times 4 = 1
2. There were 63 cars in the carpark then 8 had to leave. How many were left?
63 - 8 = 55 because   
63 - 3 = 60 60 - 5 = 55

3.  Tara has cooked up 25 roast potatoes. How many does she put on each of the 5 plates?
= 5 because 5 times 5 = 25  
25 divided by 5 = 5

4. There is a boxing match tonight. Boxer A is more experienced than Boxer B. Bower A has had 469 matches whereas Boxer B has only had 243. How many more matches has Boxer A had than Boxer B?
243 + __ = 469     243 + 57 = 300 + 169 = 469    57 + 169 = 226
226+ 243 = 469

5. At Rina’s school a school hat cost $7. Yesterday the school office had $84 of school hat sales. How many hats did they sell?
84 divided by 7 = 12
which means 7 times 12 = 84
they had sold 12

6. The red soccer team has scored 56 goals over the season so far. The is 7 times more than what the blue has scored. How many goals has the blue team scored in the season so far?
7 times 56 = 380    7 times 50 = 350    
7 times 6 = 30   30 + 350 = 380


7. There are  7 boxes. Each box has 24 tennis balls in it. How many tennis balls are there altogether?
518 because you  24 times divided by 7 =
                                             
8. There are 32 animals at the vet. five-eighths of them are cats. How many is this?
⅝ of 32  8 times 4 = 32 so you put 4 in each of 8 boxes which adds up to 32


Serenity EA/AA Term 4 Week 5 Problem Solving

1.  Tessa has bought 40 mini chocolate bars to put in goodie bags at her party. She has 8 goodie bags. How many does she need to put in each?
= 5 because 5 times 8 = 40 and she puts
5 mini chocolate bars in each goodie bag



2. John has a pizza he has cut into 16 pieces? He eats some then leaves ¾ of the pizza for the rest of the family How many slices did he eat and how many are left for the family?
= 4,  4 times 4 = 16
so john has eaten 4 pizza’s and left 4 more

3. Trevor has to drive 422 km’s. He looks at his odometer and sees he has gone 289 kms. How much further has he got to go?
422 - ? = 289       289 - ? = 422     
289 + 1 = 290    290 + 10 = 300   300 +122 = 422
122 + 10 + 1 = 133



4. The shop is selling sandals for $9 a pair.  They have sold $486 worth of jandals so far. How many pairs have they sold?
= 54 because 9 times 50 = 450
450 + 9 = 540  

5. Sam was giving away some of his marbles. He has 96 altogether. He said to his friend Ben, “You can choose to have  ¼  of them all or ⅔   of ½ of them.” Which should Ben choose?
⅔ because it equals up to 64 which is bigger than ½ of 96 and ¼ of 96



6. The A Softball team has scored 72 goals over the season so far. The is 6 times more than what the B Softball team has scored. How many goals has the B team scored in the season so far?
6 times 12 = 72   the answer is 12

7. 7 of the class are not going on camp. The ¾ of the class are. How many are in the class altogether
= 21 because ¾ of 28 = 21,  you put 7 in each box which equals up to 21  

8. There are  8 boxes. Each box has 25 apples in it. How many apples are there altogether?
200 altogether because 8 times 20 = 160   8 times 5 = 40 160 + 40  = 200

My math strategies, Working out

 Mineus. There were 225 people at the movies than 8 had to leave. How many were left?
225 - 8 = 217    225 - 5 = 220   220 - 3 = 217
